Today I will travel to Bangladesh for talks on migration and people smuggling.
I will meet key counterparts and officials including Chief Adviser, Dr Muhammad Yunus, and other members of the Bangladeshi Interim Government, to discuss shared concerns and priorities.
Australia is committed to working with Bangladesh to address shared challenges including irregular migration, maritime people smuggling, and the global humanitarian response to the Rohingya crisis.
More than 50,000 people of Bangladeshi origin call Australia home, and we appreciate the contribution they make to our country. Our people-to-people links with Bangladesh demonstrate the strength of the bilateral relationship, and the potential that exists for deepening cooperation in the future.
I am also looking forward to deepening the Australia-Bangladesh arts and culture relationship. Sharing stories through art helps us to learn about ourselves, understand each other and let the world get to know us better.
Bangladesh is an important partner in the Indian Ocean region, and we share an interest in a peaceful, stable and prosperous region.
The Australian Government supports the Interim Government’s commitment to a democratic, peaceful and inclusive Bangladesh.
