Devonport’s Bass Strait Maritime Centre is proud to present a new exhibition: Ice in the Rigging – Voyage to the Antarctic, an evocative collection of artefacts, works of art, and models relating to early Antarctic exploration, a touring exhibition from the Maritime Museum of Tasmania.
Bass Strait Maritime Centre Coordinator Joanna Gair said the exhibition has received a very warm welcome from visitors to the Centre, after opening a week ago.
“The exhibition is perfect for all ages, particularly those of us inspired by Antarctica and interested in Australia’s earliest activities on the frozen continent” Ms Gair said.
Exhibition highlights include original maps, charts, and furniture from the Australian Antarctic base, alongside paintings and wonderful models of the important vessels that made the voyage. There’s even an original ship’s biscuit from 1912, which really brings-home the hardships of life during early Antarctic explorations.
“Whether you’re looking for a deep-dive into the history of Australia’s presence in Antarctica, or an introduction, Ice in the Rigging offers something for everyone” Ms Gair said.
Ice in the Rigging, Voyage to the Antarctic will be exhibited at Bass Strait Maritime Centre until 16th April 2023. Entry to the exhibition and the museum’s shipping simulator is included in your museum entry. Special concession and family rates available.
