A West Australian man has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment by the Perth District Court for possessing 3kg of methamphetamine.
The Perth man, 40, was sentenced on Monday 18 December, 2023, after being found guilty of the offence by a jury in October.
The man was arrested at Rivervale in April 2021 where a search of his backpack uncovered 3kg of the prohibited drug.
AFP Senior Constable Matthew Scott said the AFP was committed to targeting those involved in trafficking harmful drugs into Australian communities.
“Methamphetamine is an illicit drug which has inflicted pain and suffering on countless Australian families,” he said.
“Anyone involved in distributing or trafficking illegal drugs to profit from the misery of others will be targeted and face the full force of the law.
“The AFP’s message for drug traffickers is a clear: you will be caught, and you will be prosecuted.”
Across Australia, 33 people on average were admitted to hospital every day in 2020-21 for methamphetamine-related issues*. That has an impact on the health system that can negatively affect the entire community.
The man was convicted of possessing a trafficable quantity of methamphetamine with intent to sell or supply it to another, contrary to section 6(1)(a) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1981.
He was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, with a non-parole period of six years.
