Western Australia’s regions will once again set the scene for the upcoming seasons of two popular television series.
The second season of outback drama Mystery Road will be shot later this year in and around Broome, showcasing the beautiful Kimberley region to a national audience.
The Mystery Road series which is returning after a highly praised first season, winning several industry and audience awards including the 2018 AACTA for Best Drama Series, is a spin-off of indigenous filmmaker Ivan Sen’s films Mystery Road and Goldstone.
Aussie Gold Hunters returns to the Goldfields region for a fourth season bringing the adventures of gold prospectors, an industry deeply embedded in Western Australia’s history, to screens across Australia and overseas.
The Aussie Gold Hunters series has broken all existing records to become the highest rating production in the history of Discovery Channel Australia, beating shows such as Deadliest Catch, MythBusters, Naked and Afraid and Gold Rush – an incredible achievement for a WA production.
The productions received a total of $3.21 million of WA Government funding from the Western Australian Regional Film Fund (WARFF), supported by Royalties for Regions, Screenwest and Lotterywest.
As stated by Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman:
“WARFF funding provides important cultural, social, and economic outcomes for our communities, and we are only just beginning to capitalise on this potential.
“In fact, every dollar provided in WARFF funding is expected to bring two dollars into the regions.”
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
“Projects such as these inject our regions with job opportunities, not just on set but more widely in hospitality and tourism.
“This funding is also showcasing regional Western Australian stories, landscapes and people to the world – with the East Kimberley’s exposure through Mystery Road a perfect example.”
