The Cook Government has invested a further $9.5 million into the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Rebate Scheme as mid-year projections indicate added demand in 2024-25, and as Western Australians continue to take advantage of the scheme.
The ZEV Rebate Scheme provides a $3,500 rebate for people who purchase an eligible vehicle and apply to the Department of Transport. Applications will be accepted until midnight on Saturday, 10 May 2025.
To the 30 November 2024, 9,200 ZEV rebate applications had been paid totalling $32,200,000.
To be eligible for the rebate, the vehicle must:
- be a zero-emission vehicle and be fully powered by batteries or hydrogen fuel cells;
- be a light vehicle (vehicle with a gross vehicle mass of 4.5 tonnes or less), including:
- light passenger vehicles, such as sedans, hatchbacks and sports utility vehicles (SUVs);
- light commercial vehicles; and
- light trucks.
- be granted a vehicle licence in WA on or after Tuesday, 10 May 2022;
- have a maximum dutiable value of $70,000 or less; and
- be brand new and never previously been registered or licensed in Australia or overseas.
The Department of Transport’s licensing data has shown that the number of electric vehicles (EVs) in WA increased by over 513 per cent between 31 December 2021 and 30 June 2024, making up more than 1 per cent of the total WA light vehicle fleet for the first time.
The Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) Rebate Scheme is a financial incentive to encourage the purchase of zero-emission vehicles as part of the Government’s Clean Energy Car Fund.

“Based on the Treasury’s updated forecasts for the Zero Emission Vehicle Rebate, the Cook Government has approved a further $9.5 million investment in the scheme to fund the eligible ZEV rebate applications expected to be received before closing on 10 May 2025.
“There has been significant growth in the number of electric vehicles on WA roads over the past three years, and for the first time EVs made up more than 1 per cent of WA’s light vehicle fleet in the June 2024 quarter.
“I expect as more affordable EVs are made available to the WA market, more Western Australians will look to make the switch to zero-emission vehicles, increasing interest in the ZEV rebate.”
