Western Australia will be home to one of the world’s largest clean energy production facilities with Woodside today unveiling plans to establish a global-scale hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Kwinana.
The first phase of the facility, dubbed H2Perth, will include more than $1 billion in capital expenditure.
H2Perth will be built on around 130 hectares of industrial land commercially leased from the WA Government in DevelopmentWA’s Kwinana and Rockingham Strategic Industrial areas, subject to all necessary approvals.
Construction is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs. Once operational, it is estimated the facility will support more than 200 ongoing local jobs.
Developed to supply lower cost hydrogen to domestic markets, H2Perth will directly contribute to WA’s renewable energy future.
Woodside’s project will be carbon neutral through a combination of green power and offsets.
Woodside’s plans align with a number of WA Government initiatives, including the Western Australian Renewable Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, the Diversify WA Economic Development Framework, the WA Recovery Plan and the development of the Western Trade Coast.
In the 2021-22 State Budget, the McGowan Government committed an additional $61.5 million to boost WA’s renewable hydrogen industry.
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
“The H2Perth facility is a great example of the type of renewable energy projects we want to bring to Western Australia.
“Woodside will fully fund the construction and operation of this project to create one of the world’s largest clean energy production facilities.
“My Government will support the project by leasing Woodside approximately 130 hectares of vacant industrial land in the Kwinana and Rockingham Strategic Industrial Areas.
“Making hydrogen more affordable will accelerate the uptake of clean energy, and help our State move towards a renewable energy future and net zero by 2050.
“This project will boost manufacturing in the south metropolitan region and create thousands of local jobs within the construction, manufacturing and renewable energy sectors.”
As stated by State Development, Jobs and Trade Minister Roger Cook:
“Not only will Woodside’s new facility create more jobs for Western Australians, H2Perth will help revolutionise energy consumption in our State.
“The project is laying the foundation for the production of renewable hydrogen in Western Australia, and will contribute significantly to diversifying the State’s economy.
“This is yet another economic shot in the arm for Kwinana, which continues to be a sought after centre for business development and job opportunities.”
As stated by Hydrogen Industry Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
“It is fantastic to see a major Western Australian company like Woodside investing in hydrogen here in WA.
“The scale of this project will help secure the local manufacture of critical components, and will underpin an expansion of renewable energy on the South West Interconnected System.
“We have more than 30 hydrogen project proposals on the table here in Western Australia, and we are proud to have worked with Woodside to deliver one of the world’s first major clean hydrogen production facilities in WA.”
As stated by Lands Minister Tony Buti:
“This announcement from Woodside is a clear example of how the WA Government can use strategic industrial areas in the State to fuel our renewable energy future.
“The McGowan Government is also finalising amendments to the Land Administration Act 1997, which will offer new opportunities through land tenure outcomes for the hydrogen industry throughout WA.”
