In many cultures, the home is key to our sense of safety. Our homes shelter us from the outside world and provide a space in which to carry out our lives and interact with our loved ones.
In elder abuse situations, however, the home can become a place of danger.
The Warm Safe ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Project uses art-making to start conversations about elder abuse and to spread the message that everyone has the right to live free from violence and fear.
Make your house and start that conversation!
Elder abuse
It is estimated that one in ten older people will experience elder abuse. It can be carried out by someone known to the older person, like a family member, friend, professional, or a paid caregiver.
Elder abuse comes in many forms:
- Financial
- Emotional
- Psychological
- Physical
- Sexual
- Neglect
Rates of family violence have increased substantially since COVID-19.
Ageism allows elder abuse to happen. Ageism involves negative stereotypes such as loss of social relevance, physical and intellectual capacity, and false notions about being a burden on society. We need to work together to challenge ageism and protect against its worst effects.
