We’re planning for future of sustainable, world-class trails in WA

  • Up to $25,000 available for local trail development projects
  • Local governments and incorporated organisations encouraged to apply
  • Trails include bushwalking, cycling, horse riding, snorkelling, mountain biking and more

Following the release of the WA Strategic Trails Blueprint in October 2022, the McGowan Government is now offering grants of between $5,000 and $25,000 for local trail development projects.

With increasing demand for trails across the State, a consistent and high standard of planning is essential to ensure a sustainable future for the trail industry.

Eligible local governments, community organisations and active recreation clubs are encouraged to apply for funding under the Trail Planning Grants Program, administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

The McGowan Government’s Blueprint vision is that by 2027 Western Australia’s trails will connect more people to Country. Applications must align with this vision and ensure their trails project is sustainable, inclusive, and accessible.

They must also align with the State’s eight-stage trail development process which champions sustainable trails being developed in the right place, the right way, and for the right reasons.

In the past three years the McGowan Government has invested heavily in trails which create jobs and boost regional economies, including the $10 million Collie Adventure Trails initiative.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

“My family and I are huge fans of trails and all the social, physical and mental health benefits they offer us.

“WA has some of the greatest trails in the world but for our trail industry to thrive we must encourage a high standard of planning, development, and maintenance, and ensure Aboriginal engagement and cultural values are integrated across all stages.

“The McGowan Government has shown immense leadership in the trail space and will continue to support the industry and community of trail lovers.

“That’s why we’re offering grants of between $5,000 and $25,000 to eligible local governments and organisations to help with their trail planning.”
