Western Derby to honour WA cricketer Rod Marsh

  • Tribute to WA cricketer Rod Marsh to be played at Western Derby
  • Marsh grew up in Armadale and died aged 74 on March 4 this year
  • Marsh made his first-class debut for WA, against the touring West Indies in 1968-69 scoring 104 in the second innings
  • Marsh went on to become one of Australia’s most iconic players, setting a world record 355 test match dismissals in a golden era of cricket
  • One of Western Australia’s greatest-ever cricketing talents, Rod Marsh, will be acknowledged during the iconic Western Derby on Sunday April 3.

Rod Marsh died aged 74 last month and his contributions to cricket were acknowledged by friends and family when he was farewelled during a service at Adelaide Oval on March 17.

The tribute video played during that ceremony will be played during half time at the RAC Derby on Sunday April 3.

The WA Government had offered the Marsh family a State Funeral.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

“Rod Marsh was not only one of WA’s favourite sons, but he was also a national cricketing hero for so many Australians.

“It is fitting that a tribute to his life and sporting contributions be shared during one of our most iconic sporting events, the RAC Derby.

“I would also like to thank the West Coast Eagles – for whom this is a home game – for their support in playing the tribute during the match.”

As stated by West Coast Eagles CEO Trevor Nisbett:

“Rod Marsh was a great Western Australian and it is fantastic for supporters of both clubs to get the chance to celebrate his life at half time of the RAC Derby, a game which brings so many passionate sporting fans together.”
