Western Sydney University shines bright at Mardi Gras

Western Sydney University’s 2020 Mardi Gras Contingent

For the eighth consecutive year, Western Sydney University will participate in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday 5 March.

Students, staff and alumni will attend the Sydney Cricket Ground, as part of the 44th annual celebration and inclusive expression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) identity.

The contingent will march alongside the Western Sydney University float representing the theme, ‘Boldness. Fairness. Integrity. Excellence. We Shine’.

Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Barney Glover AO, said the University was proud to be a sector leader in LGBTIQ inclusion and a longstanding supporter of the parade.

“Western Sydney University proudly acknowledges and values diversity. Our participation in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is one of the ways we celebrate our students, staff and alumni from the LGBTIQ community,” said Professor Glover.

This year’s Mardi Gras theme, ‘United We Shine’, speaks to the collective voice of LGBTIQ communities that shine brighter together.

Professor Simon Barrie, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President (Academic), who will lead the contingent on the day, highlighted the University’s ongoing support for its LGBTIQ community.

“Through our support programs and initiatives, including participation in the Mardi Gras, we are empowering our diverse and talented LGBTIQ community – and as a proud member of that community, I look forward to celebrating with everyone on the night,” said Professor Barrie.

Support for students and staff at Western Sydney University include the Ally Network, Rainbow Western and the Queer Collective – groups and initiatives committed to creating an inclusive and respectful culture.
