“Australia’s rapidly ageing population needs technological advancements to support the healthcare workforce and improve aged care services,” says Shinnick.

“By leveraging machine learning it will be possible to better assess and respond to the needs of elderly patients, significantly enhancing their quality of life.”

A one-time President of the Competitive Programming Club of the University of Adelaide, Zachary sees technology as a means to addressing society’s most challenging issues.

“I am passionate about solving real-world problems using technology to drive innovative solutions. I have developed a deep passion for computer science and machine learning research, drawn to its unique blend of problem-solving, creativity, and the opportunity to create meaningful impact,” says Shinnick.

The Westpac Scholars Trust will this year award 19 scholars who are advancing research in sustainability, technology, and social change, with a combined $3.44 million in funding.

Since 2015, the Trust and its university partners have awarded $47.6 million to 989 scholars. Each scholarship combines funding with leadership development and membership in a thriving community of changemakers dedicated to building a better future for Australia.

“These scholarships go beyond financial support; access to leadership development and networks will amplify our scholars’ impact,” says Amy Lyden, CEO of Westpac Scholars Trust.

Shinnick, too, appreciates that meaningful work comes from a balanced lifestyle.

“When I’m not in front of a computer, you can find me surfing, going for runs, or enjoying playing and watching basketball and football. My diverse interests help to keep me well-rounded and energised,” he says.

“I’m excited to continue learning and growing to make a meaningful impact in the tech industry.”
