What Waste Of Weekend

Kempsey Shire Council

Who saw this coming? The latest trend … waste. Waste is sexy. Why? Because sometimes the best thing for you is to get rid of the things you don’t need. Now is the time. Just look at your social calendar packed with waste activities this weekend.

There’s the Garage Sale Trail beginning on Saturday, a free household chemical clean out, and if you’re into retro fashion there’s even a drop off day for your flares (well, ok expired marine flares but still).

The Garage Sale Trail

Kempsey Shire is participating in the Garage Sale Trail this year. This is a nationwide secondhand event supported by Council, running across the next two weekends. It’s a double win as it encourages us to declutter sustainably, as well as providing a great opportunity to grab a few bargains while chatting with the neighbours.

There are some exciting garage sale trail registrations on the Kempsey site, including our very own Kempsey Library, with library staff putting away books, CDs, DVDs and more for the big day. Register a garage sale or start planning your weekend trail at

Chemical CleanOut

Kempsey Shire Council, in partnership with the NSW Government and Midwaste, is holding a free Household Chemical CleanOut event on Sunday, 10 November 2024, from 8 am to 3pm at the Kempsey Waste Management Centre. This one-day event is your opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals, making your home safer while helping protect our environment. For more details on what you can clean out:

Expired marine flare collection day

Have you got some expired marine flares in the back of your boat? NSW Maritime is holding an expired marine flare collection day on Thursday 14 November at Mattys Boat Ramp, New Entrance Road, South West Rocks from 7:30am-12noon.

Textile recycling trial

Finally, I’m a big fan of the new textile recycling service at the Kempsey Waste Management Centre which began in September and I’m not the only one as it has had a great community response. It’s a convenient and responsible way to dispose of a broad range of unwanted textiles. This is a 12-month trial, so keep bringing in your textiles – it’s a great way to declutter your cupboards, and to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill.

Thank you and take care,

Mayor Kinne Ring
