Wheely exciting news for community groups in need of transport – Wollongong

Does your community group need to hire a bus to support your activities? Wollongong City Council is calling for expressions of interest from community groups who could benefit from regular or occasional bus hire.

Council’s fleet of Community Transport vehicles is an affordable option for community groups that provide services or activities for older people or for people in the community who struggle to access transport.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that this service was specifically targeted for people who may find it difficult to access private or public transport because of age or personal disadvantage.

“We want to make it easier for everyone to enjoy community life. Participation starts with being able to attend activities and special events, and we recognise that not everyone can access transport,” Cr Bradbery said.

“Council’s Community Transport service offers a range of vehicles to community groups and our buses are suitable for groups of up to 22 people. Several are wheelchair accessible, and we can also provide a driver if required.

“If your community group is eligible and could benefit from this program, submit an expression of interest. You have until Saturday 31 December to apply.”

Which groups and organisations can apply?

Groups and organisations that are delivering services to:

  • People over 65 years of age and living independently in the community
  • People from Aboriginal or Torres Strait islander communities
  • People from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • People who live in rural and remote areas
  • People who are financially or socially disadvantaged

Note: Providers who are delivering services to people who are participating in other transport support programs are not eligible for this program. This includes aged care providers (residential care, ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Care Packages), disability care providers (³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Disability Insurance Scheme) and schools.
