Fishing and footy fans looking for family fun can visit Gem Pier in Williamstown on Sunday 5 May for a free VicFishKids event with AFL hero and Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) ambassador Bachar Houli.
The event is the second of six VicFishKids events to be held this year, funded by the State Government’s $27 million Target One Million plan to get more people fishing, more often.
VFA CEO Travis Dowling said the event is a great way to give kids a taste of what fishing is all about in a fun, safe and supportive environment.
“We provide everything needed in the fishing clinics, so all families have to do is turn up,” Mr Dowling said.
“We’re delighted that Bachar is headlining the day because he’s a passionate angler who’s a natural at inspiring young people from all walks of life and is happy sharing tips and tricks to catching fish and taking selfies too. So, be sure to grab a snap!
“Local angling club volunteers and Fisheries staff will provide free introductory fishing clinics and tuition, where youngsters can learn how to cast, tie knots and what to do with a fish when they catch one.
“Families who attend and register for a free fishing clinic will enter a raffle to win one of 200 rod and reel outfits, to be given away on the day.”
Mr Dowling said VicFishKids events have something for everyone including a jumping castle, face painting, kids’ activities area and a photo booth to immortalise that fish of a lifetime.
“Fishing is a great family activity and you’re never too young or old to get hooked and catch a new hobby.”
Young anglers and their parents are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear if they’re keen to fish outside the designated clinic areas or want to fish before and after their clinic session.
