Works on the Winchelsea Health Club refurbishments and the installation of two new memorial cairns in Winchelsea’s ANZAC Park are nearing completion.
The upgrade to the ANZAC Park memorial is part of the Federal Government’s ‘Saluting Their Service’ fund, a ‘Victoria Remembers Them’ grant from the State Government, and funding from Surf Coast Shire Council.
Steel frames for the two new memorial cairns were installed in recent weeks, with contractors also completing the bluestone bases and electrical works.
The site is now ready to receive the lighting and glass panels acknowledging locals who served in World War II and other conflicts. The new cairns complement the existing World War I cairn.
Turf and an irrigation system were also installed, with new stairs to be completed on the river side of the park. It is hoped a public event to officially open the Cairns can be held in the coming months observing the appropriate public health requirements.
The Winchelsea Health Club has also undergone refurbishments during COVID-19 restrictions to improve floor space, equipment, and access for members.
Located at Eastern Reserve, the health club has 200 members who enjoyed access to cardio and strength training equipment, group classes, and personal training prior to the lockdown.
Council surveyed gym users to find out what would increase patronage and improve their experience.
The improvements include increased floor space to accommodate new fitness equipment, a fresh paint colour scheme, and new flooring, a self-managed membership portal, and 24-hour access to the gym for all members.
Finishing touches will continue for the next fortnight with new branding, fresh signage, and the installation of a new member entry system, scheduled for completion in time to re-open to the community.
During Stage 3 restrictions the Surf Coast Shire Recreation Centre members (SCSRC) have combined with the Winchelsea Health Club to participate in online fitness classes.
