Winter Wonderland skates back to Civic Square in 2019

It’s almost time to get the winter woollies ready. Toowoomba’s Civic Precinct will again be transformed as Toowoomba Region celebrates our second Winter Wonderland from June 21 to July 14, 2019.

Toowoomba Regional Council Tourism and Events Portfolio Chairman Cr Geoff McDonald said the community gave last year’s event a huge tick of approval, prompting Council to bring the event back this year.

“Last year we had a bold ambition to put an open-air ice skating rink in the Civic Square and the people spoke with their skates,” Cr McDonald said.

“It was anything but an icy reception from those who attended with 20,999 pulling on skates with people travelling from as far away as Sydney for the event.

“This year aim to make the event bigger and better than ever with food, drinks, entertainment, pop up markets and the addition of an ice slide.

“There will be themed nights throughout and the whole Wonderland precinct will be lit up for the duration.

“The rink has a capacity of 150 skaters per 45 minute session, with 11 sessions planned for each day.

“Skaters will be able to enjoy the ice from 9.00am to 9.00pm Monday to Thursday and from 9.00am to 10.00pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“Supporting activities at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery and City Library will again add to the appeal of this event and help to cement it as a popular attraction.

“Council has been working to offer additional activities for residents to enjoy during winter, particularly in the mid-year school holidays.

“Winter Wonderland supports Council’s tourism strategy that identifies how our region’s four distinct seasons offer unique opportunities to create new ventures for residents and visitors to enjoy.

“Snow is a rarity in Toowoomba, but a bit of creative thinking and enterprise will allow residents to enjoy skating around an ice rink in our own Winter Wonderland.”
