  • $1.85 million Winthrop Avenue Shared Path provides important connection between QEII Medical Centre and UWA
  • The new shared path is 1.2-kilometre-long and three metres wide
  • Path will connect via Thomas Street to new Kings Park Road shared path currently under construction

Better walking and riding connections between Crawley and Shenton Park are now a reality, with completion of the Winthrop Avenue Shared Path.

The 1.2-kilometre-long, 3-metre-wide concrete path stretches from Aberdare Road to Stirling Highway, improving access from the surrounding bicycle network to Kings Park, QEII Medical Centre and The University of Western Australia.

Running along the eastern side of Winthrop Avenue and adjacent to Kings Park, the shared path marks the first stage of works within the Winthrop Avenue/Thomas Street corridor.

Future works will connect this new path via Thomas Street to the Kings Park Road shared path funded by the State and Federal Governments and currently under construction.

Once the Kings Park Road shared path is complete, a significant gap in the network will be removed, and the community will enjoy a safer, more comfortable and continuous journey across the metropolitan area.

The $1.85 million Winthrop Avenue Shared Path project is jointly funded by the State Government and the City of Perth, each committing around $925,000 towards its design and construction.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“Delivering a safe, high-quality shared path along Winthrop Avenue and Thomas Street has been a long-term goal for the State Government, and with works underway on a new shared path on Kings Park Road, we’re filling a critical gap in our network.

“Our Government is committing more than $300 million in the coming years on new path infrastructure, making it easier and safer for more people to walk, wheel and ride in WA.

“I look forward to this and future routes providing continuous links across metropolitan Perth, giving more people more choice in how they travel to and through high-density areas.”

As stated by Perth MLA John Carey:

“I am a strong advocate for more active transport infrastructure in our city and this new shared path will help fill a known gap in our network.

“This new shared path, in conjunction with the new Kings Park Road shared path that is under construction, will provide people with new ways of getting to and from the city on two wheels or on foot, and a new way to access Kings Park.”

As stated by Nedlands MLA Katrina Stratton:

“This is a fantastic project that is providing an important link from Stirling Highway to Aberdare Road.

“This area is incredibly popular for cyclists and walkers, and I have no doubt it will be a popular choice that encourages more members of our community to get out and be active.”
