WNBL Premiers UC Capitals & supporters named 2019 Canberra Citizens of Year

The University of Canberra Capitals club and supporters have been recognised for their contribution to the Canberra community in 2019 by being named the 2019 Canberra Citizens of the Year.

The Canberra Citizen of the Year is presented each year to an individual, or a group, who have made an outstanding contribution to the Canberra community.

This year the Canberra Citizen of the Year Award recognises the entire UC Capitals family – including players, coaches, volunteer support staff and local fans who supported the team to victory.

The UC Capitals came back from a 13-game losing streak in the previous season, to a 12-game winning streak in the lead up to the WNBL Grand Final series against the Adelaide Lightning.

The ACT Government is committed to promoting and supporting women in sport and the ACT leads the nation on work to remove cultural and structural barriers which prevent girls and women getting involved in sport.

On International Women’s Day, we are celebrating the achievements of a sporting club who inspire young people in our community and demonstrate the importance of team work, shared values and healthy and active living.

As stated by Lucille Bailie, General Manager at the UC Capitals:

“This victory was by no means a small achievement, or the achievement of one individual. It took the whole team, the staff, the families, friends and, of course, fans to achieve this result.”

“It is an honour for UC Capitals to receive this award in the city that has embraced us with open arms. Canberra has shown the nation that world-class athletes with grace and sportsmanship are valued and supported.”
