A law enforcement ‘Flame of Hope’ will light the way ahead of the Special Olympics State Basketball championships in Wollongong today (Saturday 9 November 2019).
Law Enforcement Torch Run NSW (LETR NSW) and the NSW Police Force will be supporting the event with a special torch procession.
Officers attached to Wollongong Police District will be joined by athletes for the torch run prior to the day’s competition.
LETR NSW is a charitable fund comprising volunteer officers from the NSW Police Force, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Corrective Services NSW and the Australian Federal Police, working together in support of Special Olympics NSW.
NSW Police have been active supporters of the Law Enforcement Torch Run since it was established in 2002.
The charity supports intellectually disabled people living in NSW via their participation in the Special Olympics, which gives people opportunities to achieve personal goals through sports training and competitions across Australia.
Southern Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar APM said he is proud to be an advocate of the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
“We are honoured to once again support the Law Enforcement Torch Run and raise awareness about these fantastic events,” Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar said.
“NSW Police has long championed a range of community groups and this event provides a great opportunity to support our vulnerable community members within the Southern Region.”
The ‘Flame of Hope’ run will commence at 8.45am today (Saturday 9 November 2019), following a route through the stadium leading in to the official opening ceremony for the 2019 Special Olympics State Basketball championships.
