Police are investigating the circumstances following the death of a woman in a fire in Thornton yesterday.
Officers attended the Goulburn Valley highway caravan park for a welfare check about 3.30pm on Tuesday, 19 April.
As police attempted to make contact with the woman, who was believed to be inside the caravan, the van became engulfed in flames.
Fire services were then called to the scene and a crime scene was established.
The remains of the woman were located earlier today.
While she is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be the 64-year-old resident of the caravan.
An arson chemist also attended the scene today and there is nothing at this time to indicate the fire was suspicious.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate the incident with oversight from Professional Standards Command, as per standard practice when a person dies in police presence.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.auExternal Link.
