Construction on the Twin Bridges at Glenlofty has begun, with Ararat Rural City and Pyrenees Shire councils working together on the project.
The Twin Bridges, as they are known locally, are two bridges in succession along the Landsborough-Elmhurst Road over the Wimmera River at Glenlofty.
Ararat Rural City Council CEO Dr Tim Harrison said the $1.5 million project was being funded by a $750,000 grant from the Federal Government’s Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development and $350,000 from each council.
Dr Harrison said construction is being done by CASA Engineering as contractor.
“Work started on October 28 and everything is progressing well with the old bridges demolished and installation of a concrete abutment wall and t-beams has been completed,” he said.
It is programmed that the deck on the southern bridge will be poured this Friday.
“The contractor has installed the beams on the southern bridge this week, and concreting is scheduled for today (Friday 15 November). The work should be finished by December 18 depending on the weather.”
The Landsborough-Elmhurst Road will be closed during this time, with provision made for locals who live nearby.
Pyrenees Shire Council CEO Jim Nolan said the project is a great example of collaboration between local governments with Federal Government funding.
“We have been impressed at the progress of this bridge replacement and we hope the community will be able to use this important link road safely for the next 100 years,” Mr Nolan said.
