The recycled water re-use scheme is a key plank in Council’s 3-point water security solution and includes re-using water for public parklands, sports fields and industrial use.
Site preparation along sections of the corridor will begin next week in Annandale – adjacent to Annandale Drive and near Yolanda Drive – with pipes to be laid in conjunction with the separate Southern Suburbs Rising Main sewer upgrade.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the start of early works on the recycled water re-use scheme was a key milestone.
“Council is working full steam ahead to deliver our 3-point water security solution for the community,” Cr Hill said.
“Early works will start next week on the recycled water re-use scheme, the 1.8m diameter pipeline is just about to be installed in the ground and we are taking registrations of interest for the Water Smart Package.
“The 3-point water security solution will be delivering water and jobs for our community for years to come.”
The Queensland Government has invested $225 million for water security in Townsville.
Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said the recycled water re-use scheme was crucial to help reduce water usage.
“This will allow us to use our water in the most efficient way possible by re-using recycled water on sports fields, public parklands and for big industrial users,” Cr Cook said.
“Council is determined to deliver long-term water security to our community because we know praying for rain is no strategy at all.”
The first section of work is expected to take about two weeks to complete and will involve the removal of about a dozen trees.
Council has contracted a specialist tree care company to undertake the work and to ensure the minimum number of trees are removed.
