Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis travels to Dili today as part of a Northern Territory trade mission.
Mr Vatskalis said the trade mission would provide City of Darwin with a range of opportunities.
“Dili is one of Darwin’s sister cities and this trip gives us a chance to reinvigorate and strengthen this relationship,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“It is also important we continue to remind our near neighbours that Darwin is a great place to study, live, visit and to do business.
“And we need to keep doing everything we can to try to attract more workers to Darwin, particularly in the construction, agricultural and hospitality sectors.”
The Dili trade mission follows the recent visit to Denpasar, led by Mr Vatskalis. That visit, involving representatives from a range of business sectors, aimed at attracting workers to Darwin.
“As the Federal Government’s Jobs and Skills Summit has highlighted, Australia is the grips of a labour shortage and needs overseas workers to help plug the gap.
“Northern Australia and cities like Darwin are feeling the effects of this more acutely than most areas of the country,” Mr Vatskalis said.
The trade mission will visit Dili from 7-9 September.
