Tasmania Police is continuing its road safety focus this week, with a highly visible 24-hour traffic operation taking place from Wednesday.
Led by Northern District, the operation will see every available police officer in the north of the state focusing on preventing fatal and serious crashes on our roads.
The effort will include drug detector dogs, detectives and uniform officers and will be further supported by road policing services members from western and southern Tasmania.
Inspector Darren Hopkins from Northern Road Policing Services said other road safety stakeholders were also taking part.
“The ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Heavy Vehicle Regulator and Transport Safety are allocating a significant number of staff to support this road safety focus,” he said.
“This is another example of police and their road safety partners doing everything they can to improve safety on our roads.”
“Tasmania Police will continue to focus on the fatal five contributors to road deaths and serious injuries; speeding, inattention, drink and drug driving, seatbelts and fatigue.”
“We’re asking all road users to heed our warnings, and to work with us to keep everyone safe on Tasmanian roads.”
“Too often, especially this year, we have seen the devastating impact that serious and fatal crashes are having on our community.”
“While most motorists do the right thing, there are still too many people who don’t, and we need all Tasmanians to stand with us in saying Enough is Enough when it comes to taking risks on our roads.”
“We’re no longer issuing cautions for ‘fatal five’ offences, so if you’re caught doing the wrong thing – you will be issued with an infringement notice on the spot.”
