Today, Friday 31 May, marks World No Tobacco Day 2024.
This year’s theme is protecting children from tobacco industry interference, giving a platform to young people across the world and Tasmania to champion healthy lifestyle choices.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett, has thrown his full support behind the initiative.
“Smoking kills more than 500 Tasmanians each year and places a significant strain on our healthcare system as we deal with what are often preventable conditions,” Minister Barnett said.
“The theme of this year’s World No Tobacco Day is incredibly timely, given just this week our Government launched the new Vaping, Youth and Health e-learningpackage, which is being rolled out across all schools in Tasmania.
“World No Tobacco Day is a great day to think about quitting smoking or vaping and I would encourage all Tasmanians to consider the harm smoking products have on our community.
“Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is about realising a happier, healthier Tasmania – and by starting conversations about smoking and vaping we can continue to make Tasmania a happier, healthier place.”
