Wounding and assault charges at Cairns

A girl has been charged after two people were allegedly slashed with a knife in Central Cairns yesterday afternoon.

It will be alleged at around 2pm a 12-year-old girl was standing outside of a shopping centre on McLeod Street when she became aggressive towards a group of girls known to her.

It is further alleged she then produced a knife and chased the group, who fled into a nearby retail store.

The girl continued to follow one of the group behind the counter, a 16-year-old girl, and allegedly began stabbing her in the arm, causing injury.

A 47-year-old woman who attempted to intervene and stop the assault was also allegedly slashed across the arm.

The girl fled the store and was arrested by police a short time later. As she was being transported it is alleged the girl spat in the face of a police officer upon arrival at the watchhouse.

A 12-year-old Manunda girl has been charged with wounding, assault occasioning bodily harm whilst armed, going armed so as to cause fear, possession of a knife and serious assault of a police officer by spitting.

She was also charged with a further two counts of stealing following two alleged shoplifting incidents prior to the assault.

The 16-year-old girl and 47-year-old woman were both treated for their injuries which are not considered life-threatening.
