Year of Outback Tourism kicks on with 2FOR1 train tickets (Ministerial statement)

Queensland families are being encouraged to head west these summer holidays as part of the Year of Outback Tourism.

In support of outback communities, Queensland Rail is offering a 2FOR1 sale on all its western train services.

Valid for travel from December 1 to February 29, 2020, families can use the offer on economy seats for The Inlander and The Westlander, and economy seats and first-class sleepers on the Spirit of the Outback.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the best way to help our Outback communities is to go visit them.

“It’s been a tough year for Queensland’s red heart, with natural disasters devastating many rural communities,” the Premier said.

“It’s been great to see so many people backing the bush and visiting events like the Mt Isa Rodeo, Birdsville Races and Vision Splendid Film Festival in Winton.

“We want Queenslanders to continue showing their support for our outback communities well into 2020.

“Outback tourism is already worth more than $350 million and supports 3700 jobs, and we’re continuing to work closely with local governments and businesses, community organisations and festival promoters to ensure these numbers continue to grow.”

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the Year of Outback Tourism has been an important opportunity to get more people out west.

“By visiting our outback towns, people are helping keep local business doors open much longer than they normally would be during summer months,” he said.

“Through previous 2FOR1 sales, off-peak travel in western Queensland has jumped close to 30 per cent in recent years, providing a much needed boost for local economies.

“I want to encourage mums, dads, couples and carers thinking of a summer holiday to consider this great deal and to visit western Queensland.”
