City of Darwin is seeking community feedback on its draft Play Space Strategy 2022-30.
When finalised, the strategy will shape the way City of Darwin provides play and active recreation spaces across the next eight years.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the Play Space Strategy 2022-2030 helped prioritise the development of active recreation spaces that were consistent with Council’s vision and community needs.
“The strategy will guide City of Darwin in the provision of suitable, accessible and well-maintained play spaces that support healthy and active lifestyles now and into the future,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“Council values the input of the local community, which is why we’re asking for people to have their say before the strategy is finalised.
“It’s important we get the views of a broad range of people, including parents and carers of small children, young people, grandparents, and sports, recreation and community groups,” he said.
The Play Space Strategy 2022-30 outlines six priorities:
1. Quality over Quantity
Play spaces to have broad appeal rather than smaller sites with limited appeal and are equitably located across municipality.
2. Diversity
Play spaces to be inspiring and creative with opportunities for a wider range of ages, abilities and backgrounds including opportunity for adventurous play.
3. Maximising Use
Play spaces to have opportunities for physical activity and social interaction for an extended time.
4. Access for All Abilities
Play spaces to be inclusive for people of all abilities to play, be active and socialise together.
5. Shade and Weather Mitigation
Play spaces to reduce weather impacts and support extended use.
6. Sustainable Asset Management
Provide timely repair and sustainable renewal and development for play spaces.
