The Geographical Names Board is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Lane Cove Council to name a reserve in the suburb of St Leonards as Wadangarri Park.
Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood said the word Wadangarri meant Banksia from the Cammeraygal language group and reflected the prominent plantings and banksia design features of the new playground.
“Place naming is a recognised way of reawakening and preserving Aboriginal languages,” Ms Underwood said.
“We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name.”
The reserve is above the North Shore Railway Line at St Leonards.
It shares a boundary with the Pacific Highway, extending south towards Marshall Lane and Christie Lane. Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board’s website
Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795. The closing date for submissions is 14 January 2023.
