A new generation of inspiring young artists is set to show off their skills this week, with the return of the annual City of Melbourne Signal Summer Showcase.
More than 100 up-and-coming artists from across greater Melbourne will take to the stage this Friday for a night of live electronic music, theatre performances, exhibitions, film screenings and a “Glamazonia” fashion show.
Chair of the City of Melbourne’s Arts, Culture and Heritage portfolio, Councillor Rohan Leppert, said the young artists have been practising hard for the past 10 days to perfect their pieces.
“This is a one-night only celebration showcasing the next generation of Melbourne’s young creative community,” Cr Leppert.
“Whether it’s film, fashion, music, spoken word or theatre, the Signal Summer Showcase has something for everyone.
“Through intensive workshops and mentorship by established artists, these enthusiastic and talented young people are keen to make their mark and show what they’re capable of. This is a unique opportunity to see young people’s creative vision for the future in action.”
Hosted by Sami ‘Obama’ Weleda’abgzi, the 2020 Signal Summer Showcase will feature:
- A catwalk of ethical fashion made with ostentatious local fashion label Gun Shy and textile artist String Designs;
- Screening of short films made with international film maker Kate Lefoe;
- Live electronic music representing our Techno-feminist Future made with Sound School;
- Unique “Artivism” theatre performance made with Western Edge Youth Arts;
- An exhibition of risograph printing made with Glom Press.
This year’s showcase will also feature two art-form streams supported by the VicHealth Gender Equality through the Arts program – giving female identifying and non-binary young people the opportunity to express their creative vision for a gender equal future through film, sound and spoken word as part of Signal’s Female Futures project.
